KATMANDU, Nepal: Devastating floods on the China-Nepal border have killed at least 987 people in Nepal, the disaster authority said Tuesday, taking overall deaths to more than 1,000. Chinese state media earlier confirmed 16 people were killed in Tibet, bringing the total toll from Wednesday’s disaster to 1,003. The number of missing in Nepal dropped to 3,916, as rescue efforts entered a seventh day, and the bodies recovered rose. In China, state media say there 546 people missing, taking the overall number of missing to 4,462.
SACRAMENTO, California: California would allow Jews to voluntarily identify their Jewish heritage on state forms under a bill the state Legislature passed Monday. The bill, which lawmakers sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk, would require state agencies that collect demographic information to add “Jewish” as an option for ethnicity or ancestry. The goal is to give state officials and researchers better data on Jewish Californians, including their unemployment rates and representation in schools.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan: Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tuesday that Tehran would "immediately" reciprocate if the United States returned to a June deal aimed at ending their war. "I state explicitly that if the United States returns to its commitments under the aforementioned memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately take reciprocal action," Pezeshkian said at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, according to the website of the Iranian presidency.
ATHENS: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun asked Greece on Monday for support in implementing a US-sponsored agreement with Israel, hours after Greece and Israel announced a multibillion-dollar arms deal. GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: Heavy Israeli bombardment killed three people in Gaza City on Tuesday, Palestinian health officials said, in what both sides described as an Israeli-backed ground operation to seize a senior Hamas figure. Eyewitnesses reported around a dozen strikes on Tuesday morning in western Gaza City, where the territory’s civil defense agency said three people were killed, including two children and a woman.
CALI, Colombia: A car bomb exploded Saturday in southwestern Colombia, the army said, a day after conservative political neophyte Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn in as Colombia’s new president. The army alleged the attack was carried out by two dissident groups of the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
